Samford University’s home away from home is turning 40, and the SamfordGlobal Office plans to celebrate the occasion with several events, at home and abroad, for the Samford community to participate in.

In 1983, Samford President Thomas E. Corts had a vision for an international classroom that would foster world awareness and global citizenship. Since that time, countless students have called the Daniel House home, engaging in the life-changing experience of living, working and studying abroad.

“The Daniel House has been a fixture in the Samford community for decades and is often considered a highlight of the Samford experience,” said Lauren Doss, executive director of SamfordGlobal. “As such, we plan to commemorate its 40th birthday by showcasing the renovated space as well as our updated student programming.”

Celebration week kicks off in London on March 25, but it does not end there. Samford will be celebrating its flagship study abroad location all year with celebrations concluding stateside as part of Homecoming Weekend, Nov. 1-2.

“With so many thoughtful alumni wishing to pay tribute to their Samford abroad experiences, our office plans to continue showcasing this important anniversary throughout the year for all those audiences who are unable to return to the Daniel House later this month,” said Jordan Cummings, assistant director of SamfordGlobal.

Those who are making plans to join the party in London will be among the first alumni to witness the completed renovations undertaken in 2018-19. Given the Victorian townhouse’s more than 150 years in Kensington, the structure required several updates to not only maintain the historical home, but to enhance the learning space to provide the quality education Samford is known for.

“We take great pride in the remarkable transformation of the Daniel House. This renovation has modernized the building to meet the current needs of our students, all while preserving and enhancing its historical charm and appeal.” said Tom Crosby, director of U.K. programmes and operations. “The transformation was truly from the top down; every bedroom and bathroom has been updated, several spaces have increased functionality and accessibility, the exterior has seen structural refurbishment and the learning center’s technology has been enhanced to create the best possible environment for learning.”

While exciting London continues to attract many students to the Daniel House each year, education remains at the heart of its purpose. Since the Daniel House opened its doors in 1984, study abroad opportunities at the facility have changed the lives of Samford’s students and faculty.

“It is a special place, not just to the Samford community but to the pursuit of academic excellence and cultural perspective,” said Crosby. “There are not many institutions that can offer this kind of commitment to international education and professional development.”

For those who are planning on joining the celebrations across the pond, in London, RSVP to let the SamfordGlobal team know they can expect you. For those who are planning on celebrating from the United States, the week of March 25 still offers opportunities for you to join in the fun.
